Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa Calls for Increased Climate Financing

Addressing the Taiyuan Energy, Climate, Environment Forum in Xanxi, China, by video, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa called for increased climate financing, especially for developing countries to meet the threat of climate change. He emphasized the danger posed to humanity by increasingly violent and disastrous climate phenomena and by sea level rise, which affects populations living along the coastal areas of island states, in particular. The climate change unfairly burdens  poor developing countries to a greater extent.

The forum was addressed by the President of Ethiopia, the PM of Luxembourg, the Governor General of Papua New Guinea the PM of Cambodia, the DSG UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs, and the environment and energy ministers of Pakistan, Mongolia, and Greece. The clear message was that global warming and climate change are becoming a proximate reality and required robust counter measures, especially by sharply reducing GHG emissions.
