 “Sinhala-Hindu New Year Celebrations” in Beijing


The main event of the Sinhala Hindu New Year Festival was celebrated at the premises of   Embassy of Sri Lanka in Beijing on 15th April 2018 with over 400 participants including Sri Lankans, Chinese and other foreign well-wishers.

 H.E. Dr. Karunasena Kodituwakku, Ambassador of Sri Lanka to P.R. of China chaired the celebrations and highlighted the importance of organizing these types of cultural events since it provides the immense opportunity for Sri Lankans in Beijing and adjoining areas to get-together and enjoy the familiar environment though they are living far a way from the motherland. Mr. Sivanka Dhanapala, UNHRC Representative in China also participated in the event. The celebration was co-organized by the Embassy and China – Sri Lanka Youth Forum.

 The ceremony began with the lighting of the traditional oil lamp. The Festival was filled with traditional customs and rituals providing an immense opportunity to showcase the value of the Sri Lankan tradition and customs. Boiling of milk, “kevum-kiribath table” of Sri Lankan traditional foods were open to all participants. The event was more colorful with the cultural performances made by Beijing and Tianjin Students and all participants were treated with traditional Sri Lankan lunch.

 The event also offered the experience of number of ‘Avurudu’ games to the participants who enjoyed pillow fighting, hitting of pots, bursting of balloons, volleyball, and musical chairs etc. The “Avurudu” games commenced with around 2km marathon connecting nearby roads around Sri Lanka Embassy. At the end of the ceremony the selection of “Beijing Bakmaha Kumara” and “Beijing Bakmaha Kumari” took place and it was the most eye-catching event.

   Chathuri Wickremaarachchi and Pragalathan Elanko were selected as “Bakmaha Kumari” and “Bakmaha Kumara” respectively. The event was published in Chinese websites and also in Wechat which is the most popular electronic social media in China including the Public Diplomacy Network Wechat.

 The Sri Lankan students in Sichuan also informed the Embassy on their New Year celebrations held on the same day in Jiang’an University in Sichuan with the participation of Sri Lankan community and well-wishers there.
